“Wait, we’re still burning coal near a ball field?”
The North Omaha coal plant casts long shadows over an area already bearing the scars of systemic disenfranchisement.
Plans to decommission the coal plant were delayed, leaving the local power structure's promises hanging in the air like particulate matter.
This initiative aims to shine a spotlight on a critical, yet often overlooked issue—the environmental and social challenges facing one of Omaha's most historically underserved neighborhoods.
Leveraging unconventional print techniques:
The goal was to show how widespread the unseen emissions were in the community. By using a ph-sensitive dye on campaign materials near the coal plant, the design collateral could show the unseen particulates sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide.
As the ink was exposed to the acidity of emissions it would turn red.
If it didn’t turn red, great! No pollution.
By strategically placing collateral in places where emissions were expected and where they weren’t sounded a visual alarm.
Select campaign touch points such as apparel and drinkware underscored the pollution’s reach to humans, uncovering the real threat.
